Don't Get Stopped at the Polls on Election Day

What does it take to vote in this critical election? Did you know that Arizona is the only U.S. state to require proof of citizenship in order to register to vote? Or that Florida and Michigan require photo IDs at the polling machines? New American Meadia is here to help sort out these rules and conditions in many battleground states.

New America Media, the country’s first and largest collaboration of ethnic news outlets, presents a series of print and radio public service announcements to inform ethnic media audiences with what they need to cast a vote on Election Day. NAM is partnering with voter-engagement groups to execute a succinct, attention-getting public guide to voting. This initiative is founded on the belief that no voting information should be taken for granted as common knowledge in an election year—especially when threats to American election integrity are widespread, and when election laws vary dramatically on a state-by-state basis.

Focusing on nine states—Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Michigan, Missouri, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin—New America Media will create multi-lingual pre-produced public service announcements that tell readers “What to Bring to The Polls on Election Day.”

Voter Caging in Michigan

Two weeks ago, the Michigan Messenger ran a story about the GOP’s plans to use a list of foreclosed homes to stop people from voting. Now the Michigan Republican Party is threatening to sue the Messenger for Libel. The Messenger is holding their ground, but unfortunately this is just one of many stories of voter disenfranchisement appearing as the 2008 election nears.

From voter caging and disenfranchisement, to youth organizing, voter registration, suppression and unreliable electronic voting machines, preserving the integrity of the vote is of critical concern this election season.

This is why Live From Main Street Columbus will devote an entire week to revealing and discussing these issues, and help prevent 2004 from happening again.

Live From Main Street Columbus: Will Your Vote Count? will be a week-long virtual town hall series, hosted by radio personality Laura Flanders, that kicks-off on September 29. Each day, Live From Main Street's virtual town hall will broadcast Ohio-based news on election protection issues to a national audience via television segments, articles, blogs, live chats, radio pieces, short investigative documentaries, panel discussions, one-on-one interviews and a statewide conference call with local leaders.

Flashing back to LFMS Minneapolis

In light of this week's violations of civil liberties and the unlawful arrests of journalists at the RNC, we thought it would be a good time to revisit this clip from LFMS Minneapolis. It features Bruce Nestor of the National Lawyers Guild, who has been all over the media in the follow up to last weekend's raids.
